Egg McMuffin Inventor Dies at 89

LOS ANGELES (March 26) - Herb Peterson, who invented the ubiquitous Egg McMuffin as a way to introduce breakfast to McDonald's restaurants, has died, a Southern California McDonald's official said Wednesday. He was 89.

Peterson died peacefully Tuesday at his Santa Barbara home, said Monte Fraker, vice president of operations for McDonald's restaurants in that city.

He began his career with McDonald's Corp. as vice president of the company's advertising firm, D'Arcy Advertising, in Chicago. He wrote McDonald's first national advertising slogan, "Where Quality Starts Fresh Every Day."

Peterson eventually became a franchisee and was currently co-owner and operator of six McDonald's restaurants in Santa Barbara and Goleta, Fraker said.

Peterson came up with idea for the signature McDonald's breakfast item in 1972. He "was very partial to eggs Benedict," Fraker said, and worked on creating something similar.

The egg sandwich consisted of an egg that had been formed in a Teflon circle with the yolk broken, topped with a slice of cheese and grilled Canadian bacon. It was served open-faced on a toasted and buttered English muffin.

The Egg McMuffin made its debut at a restaurant in Santa Barbara that Peterson co-owned with his son, David Peterson.

Fraker said that, although semiretired, Peterson still visited all six of his stores in the Santa Barbara area until last year when his health began to deteriorate.

"He would talk to the customers, visit with the employees. He loved McDonald's," Fraker said.

Fraker, who said he worked with Peterson for 30 years, said "he was amazing as far as giving back to the community."

"He embraced the community and the community embraced him," Fraker said. "We loved the man."

Peterson is survived by his wife, son and three daughters.

A public memorial service will be held April 23 at All Saints by the Sea church in Montecito.

It is two days before the fashion show, and I still can't wait for it to be over and done with. My leadership abilities have been tested thoroughly this semester and year. Our teams have all worked so hard for this fashion show, and we are very proud of what we've done. 

I have learned so far that delegation is a huge part of leadership, especially when you are a control freak.

Micromanaging is NOT the key to good leadership.

Seminar

The Kirk Weisler seminar was more valuable than I had initially expected, but I really didn't expect anything in the beginning. I've seen various speakers and they are all great. There's nothing really different about each one, but they are all similar in the sense that they speak with conviction, have a sense of humor, and are amazing orators. 

I really admire people who can speak in front of a large audience, especially made up of people not in their age bracket. It's hard to communicate to different generations, in the way they need to communicate. 

The best thing that I got from the seminar is probably the book list that he gave us. I get really excited when people tell me about books they love to read, because even though I may not have the "time" to read, I do love it. 

I took lots of notes during his seminar, and most of them were key phrases and concepts he used about leadership. His advice to also write pretty much everything down, and always carry something to write with and write on is something I respect very much. I keep a moleskine notepad with me at almost ALL times, for just those kinds of occasions and a rare epiphany I might come across. I helps me with my creativity, and for organizing my life.

Kirk was an amazing source of inspiration and exemplary leadership. The only thing i didn't connect as well to him was on his talks about merging into corporate America with the ideals and concepts he was relaying to us. My goal is to not join corporate America, but to stay small, with independent ideals and focus on the "small business" side of things. To focus on personal identity, intimate connections with people, and a close community.

Overall, he was very good and made the 5 hours seem less long. But it was still 5 hours, and still felt long.
